Last Man Standing ch4bAbove the demi-continent of Riushu, the full moon hung high in the sky. It was that moon that caused elkannen xeno-archeologists such consternation of late. They didn't know this, of course--no theorist among their numbers had yet stumbled upon the small realization that the moon, which El'Kannen science had long known caused tides, had (through the frictional energy of the tides) been slowing the rotation of earth for all the years between the time of the El-kannen and the time of Man, thus resulting in a day that was much longer for the El-kannen and caused a great many fewer days in a year.Last Man Standing ch4b

Last Man Standing Ch4aGuva looked up and out, over the balcony. It was a good view, showing most of the subterrainean city. Or colony. It probably would have seemed more like some kind of insect colony to the humans. Guva looked up at the ceiling, well-endowed with carvings and decorations natural to any elkannen city. Tunnels sprouted from and into the walls of this main central chamber, one of seven in Riushu. His seat on a balcony near the apex gave him a splendid view of the area, and the small set of structures at the bottom. "Now we're going to start the section on humans," Arex said again. The fourth time since. It had gotten easier, a little; she no longer choked up like she had the first year, or even teared a little as she had the second and third. This year, she was able to get it out with an even keel. "I'm sure you all know that not everybody agrees that we should teach about humans in schools, but I want to know what you already know about them."
